Kabwata
KabwataThe Kabwata Orphanage and Transit Centre is based on the Burma Road in Lusaka. It is a secluded haven where orphaned, mistreated and abandoned children live, cared for by the centre's co-ordinator, Mrs Angela Miyanda and her staff of 'aunties'.

The staff ensure that the children are fed, educated and loved. Most of the young people in the Kabwata Orphanage are from Zambia, but there are also young survivors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide living there.
Volunteer Service
Volunteer Service One of the main ways that we assist the Kabwata Orphanage is through service. Our volunteers both at Easter and in the Summer, work alongside the Aunties, helping with cleaning, gardening, cooking, painting and playing with the kids. This is hugely important to the relationship building and acting in solidarity which are central to Project Zambia's mission.
Plumbing System
Plumbing System Project Zambia has funded the installation of a new plumbing system in the Orphanage, allowing for access to clean drinking water and hot water for bathing.
Support For Aunties
Support For Aunties Project Zambia supports wages for the full-time care workers that staff Kabwata Orphanage. The 'aunties' as they are called are more than simply care-workers, they are family to the children living in Kabwata.
Sustainability Projects
Sustainability ProjectsProject Zambia has in the past, funded salaries for the orphanage staff, but is now concentrating on funding and working on Sustainability projects, to allow the Orphanage to manage its own running costs.

Included in these projects is a vegetable garden and a chicken run, so that vegetables, eggs and chicken can feed the children and the staff and so that these things can also be sold in the local marketplace to generate income.

We have also, in 2007, funded the buying of land to create a banana plantation which will be used as a food and income generation project for the Kabwata Orphanage. The profits from this plantation have funded the costs of a library building in the Orphanage, which has benefitted the children's school work and given them a quiet place to read and relax.
