Volunteer
VolunteerTo volunteer with Project Zambia, you must be available to attend regular meetings in North Belfast and be prepared to dedicate your time over an entire year before your trip to Zambia.

We recruit new volunteers all year round, but to travel to Zambia in summer, you must be signed up from September of the previous year i.e. September 2007 to travel in July 2008. Volunteers spend two weeks in Zambia in July and for most, it's not a one off, as they continue to work with us year after year.

If you are interested in getting involved, please read on for some of our Volunteer's experiences and email us at info@projectzambia.com for more information.

How long have you been a PZ volunteer?
For over 4 years and I have travelled to Zambia 3 times.

Why did you want to become involved with Project Zambia?
To make a difference and to be part of an organisation that is different in that it recognises that the third world's problems are essentially caused by excess wealth in the west. They are poor because we are rich. For PZ, these things are linked and to say that they aren't has been the tired old mantra of those who support the capitalist system based on greed and opulence that dominates so much of people's lives, even here in Ireland.

What do you enjoy most about being a Project Zambia Volunteer?
The relationships that I have built with my Zambian friends. They are some of the most amazing people that I have ever encountered and I look forward to seeing them year after year.

Which have been your favourite projects to work on in Zambia and why?
I always enjoy mucking in at the Agriculture project, even if I am completely useless at it! The guys who work there always seem to appreciate having someone to help out a it. Its nice to come back the year after and see some of the things you planted growing. You get a good sense of achievement.

How long have you been a PZ volunteer?
This will be my 3rd trip to Zambia

Why did you want to become involved in Project Zambia?
When I was at school we heard about the work being done by the Christian Brothers in Zambia so when the opportunity came I wanted to become part of this work.

What do you enjoy most about being a PZ volunteer?
Being with a group of dedicated people and seeing how our work is changing the lives of many people in Lusaka. The African singing at Mass is also an uplifting experience.

What have been your favourite projects to work on in Zambia and why?
It has to be the work in Kabwata orphanage. Inside there is an amazing tranquillity compared to the conditions on the outside. To see the happiness and smiles on these children's faces makes the whole work of Project Zambia worthwhile.

How long have you been a PZ volunteer?
Since September 2007

Why did you want to become involved with Project Zambia?
I always had an interest in travelling to Africa to do some aid work and made enquiries in the past about doing so - but I was told by some organisations that I didn't have the relevant skills. A friend travelled out in 2007 and when he explained to me what PZ was about, I thought that this organisation was different and I wanted to become part of it.

What do you enjoy most about being a Project Zambia Volunteer?

Pretty much everything. Volunteering in Zambia was a phenomenal experience and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Although if it had to be narrowed down to one thing, I'd have to say that it's the opportunity to work alongside and make friends with such fantastic and inspiring people (both volunteers and Zambians alike).

Which have been your favourite projects to work on in Zambia and why?
It was great to have been part of the agricultural project in Mapepe, especially as it will be used to initiate a feeding programme for the school. Although the work was extremely hard, the aching limbs and bleeding blisters were quickly forgotten when the first vegetable shoots starting poking through the soil. The thing that I enjoyed doing most of all in Zambia though, was swapping songs and stories with the locals especially the children. Standing in the middle of Misisi, singing and dancing to '3 Little Monkeys' was one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences of my life and it confirmed to me that my current choice of career was the right one.
