How long have you been a PZ volunteer?
Since September 2007
Why did you want to become involved with
Project Zambia?
I always had an interest in travelling to Africa
to do some aid work and made enquiries in the
past about doing so - but I was told by some
organisations that I didn't have the relevant
skills. A friend travelled out in 2007 and when
he explained to me what PZ was about, I thought
that this organisation was different and I
wanted to become part of it.
What do you enjoy most about being a Project
Zambia Volunteer?
Pretty much everything. Volunteering in Zambia
was a phenomenal experience and I thoroughly
enjoyed every minute of it. Although if it had
to be narrowed down to one thing, I'd have to
say that it's the opportunity to work alongside
and make friends with such fantastic and
inspiring people (both volunteers and Zambians
alike).
Which have been your favourite projects to
work on in Zambia and why?
It was great to have been part of the
agricultural project in Mapepe, especially as it
will be used to initiate a feeding programme for
the school. Although the work was extremely
hard, the aching limbs and bleeding blisters
were quickly forgotten when the first vegetable
shoots starting poking through the soil. The
thing that I enjoyed doing most of all in Zambia
though, was swapping songs and stories with the
locals especially the children. Standing in the
middle of Misisi, singing and dancing to '3
Little Monkeys' was one of the most memorable
and enjoyable experiences of my life and it
confirmed to me that my current choice of career
was the right one. |
